Per-state sales tax summary
Open the order export from your store or marketplace and choose the columns for order id, ship-to state, taxable amount, and tax collected. The tool totals orders by state and proves the state rows add back up to the whole file. It reports what the export says was collected. It holds no tax rates, thresholds, or filing rules.
The file is read in your browser and stays on this device. Nothing is uploaded, and the tool never signs in to a store.
Or paste the rows, with the header row first:
The rows are read in this browser and are not uploaded.
These are matched from the header words. Export layouts differ and change, so check them and change any that are wrong. The taxable amount column is optional.

Orders with a missing or unknown state
These orders are counted in the grand total and listed here so nothing is dropped.
This summary shows what the export says was collected. It contains no tax rates, thresholds, or filing rules, and it does not say what is owed or due anywhere.
This tool is independent. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Etsy, Shopify, Amazon, eBay, or any other marketplace. Marketplace names are used only to describe the exports people bring to it.
What gets checked
- Every order is counted exactly once, and every row of the file belongs to one order. Rows that share an order id are added together.
- Each order is under exactly one state, or in the separate list when its state is missing, not recognized, or different on different rows.
- State rows plus the separately listed orders equal all orders, by count.
- State rows plus the separately listed orders equal the file's total taxable amount and total tax collected, added a second way.
- The totals shown match the second pass.
- Every row with data was read. A row that could not be read is listed with the reason and the result is marked not verified.
How it works
- Open the export. Drop the .csv or .xlsx order export, or paste its rows with the header row first. It is read in the browser.
- Check the columns. Order id, ship-to state, taxable amount, and tax collected are matched from the header words. Layouts differ between platforms and change over time, so every choice can be changed. The taxable amount column is optional.
- Summarize. Rows are grouped into orders by order id, each order is placed under its ship-to state (two-letter codes and full state names are both read), and each state's orders, taxable amount, and tax collected are totaled.
- Review and download. Orders with a missing or unknown state are listed separately with the reason. Download Excel or CSV with the certificate, or print.
Worked example
A made-up export of eight rows. Order A-1006 has two rows, one order has no state, and one ships to ON, which is not a US state.
| Order ID | Ship State | Subtotal | Tax Collected |
|---|---|---|---|
| A-1001 | CA | 50.00 | 4.13 |
| A-1002 | TX | 20.00 | 1.65 |
| A-1003 | California | 30.00 | 2.48 |
| A-1004 | 15.00 | 0.00 | |
| A-1005 | ON | 40.00 | 0.00 |
| A-1006 | tx | 10.00 | 0.83 |
| A-1006 | 5.00 | 0.41 | |
| A-1007 | NY | 25.00 | 2.22 |
Seven orders on eight rows. California: 2 orders, $80.00 taxable, $6.61 tax collected. New York: 1 order, $25.00, $2.22. Texas: 2 orders, $35.00, $2.89. The three states total 5 orders, $140.00, and $11.72. Listed separately: A-1004 (no state) and A-1005 (ON), 2 orders, $55.00, $0.00. Grand total: 7 orders, $195.00 taxable, $11.72 tax collected, equal to the file's column totals.
The example uses made-up names and numbers.
Questions
Does it tell me where sales tax is owed or when a return is due?
No. It adds up what the export says was collected, by ship-to state. It contains no tax rates, no economic nexus thresholds, and no filing rules, and it makes no statement about what is owed anywhere.
What happens to orders with no state, or a state it does not recognize?
They are never dropped. Each one is listed separately with the reason (no state, text that is not a US state or territory, or rows that name different states) and counted in the grand total, and the certificate carries a warning with the count.
My export has one row per item, not per order. Is each order still counted once?
Yes. Rows with the same order id are added together into one order. The page says how many order ids appeared on more than one row. If an export repeats the order's full tax amount on every item row, the tax would be added more than once, so compare the grand total with the export's own total.
Which order export layouts does it read?
Any .csv or .xlsx with a header row and columns for order id, ship-to state, and tax collected. No platform's layout is assumed: header words are matched, the choices are shown, and each one can be changed.
Is this tool connected to Shopify or another platform?
No. It is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Shopify, Etsy, Amazon, eBay, or any other platform. It never signs in to a store; it only reads the file you open, in your browser.
This tool calculates and checks numbers. It is not legal, tax, or medical advice.
